On May 7, 2025, Rapid City Regional Airport hosted Wings of Wonder, an inclusive event designed to support individuals with accessibility needs as they navigate the airport environment. The guided tour gave participants and their families a low-stress opportunity to walk through the airport experience—building confidence and familiarity before an actual flight.
Attendees explored key stages of air travel, from check-in to security screening and the gate area. The event was particularly impactful for individuals with autism, sensory processing differences, and first-time travelers who may benefit from extra preparation and support.
Over 50 participants joined the event, which was made possible through a partnership between the airport and numerous local organizations. Wondermakers Travel, a South Dakota-based accessible travel agency, co-created the event and provided valuable guidance throughout the day. Other participating partners included Liv Hospitality, Rapid City Rush, Kids Deserve Dads, the City of Rapid City Accessibility Committee, the Autism Society of America, and Rapid City Area Schools.
RAPaws for Passengers airport therapy dogs also made a special appearance—providing comfort and a few tail wags to excited travelers. The experience concluded with an optional airfield bus tour, giving guests a behind-the-scenes glimpse of airport operations.
“Air travel should be inclusive for all,” said Patrick Dame, Executive Director of Rapid City Regional Airport. “We’re proud to be a pioneer in accessibility in the Dakotas and to work alongside community partners to provide meaningful experiences that empower every traveler.”
Wings of Wonder stood out not only for its thoughtful design, but also for the collaboration it inspired across agencies and advocates. It served as a strong reminder that when travel is made more accessible, everyone benefits.
