The Black Hills Airport Advisory Board, which last met in September 2019, is being revived by the city of Spearfish due to major developments at the airport. With the construction of a new terminal on the horizon, The advisory board will play a crucial role in shaping policies, improving infrastructure, and enhancing communication between the city, the aviation community, and the airport management.
Spearfish Public Works Director Adam McMahon outlined the board’s responsibilities, including advising on water and sewer infrastructure upgrades that will accompany the terminal construction. The reconstituted board is expected to include six or seven members: three from the flying community, two from the business sector, and one elected official, either the mayor or a city council member.
Mayor Senden emphasized that the board will be instrumental in developing policy guidelines to ensure smooth operations and clear expectations as the airport grows. The airport is city-owned, maintained by the Spearfish Public Works Department.
The process of assembling the advisory board is slated to begin in earnest in October. The reestablishment of the board is seen as a key step in ensuring the airport’s successful adaptation to future demands.
