The City of Pierre, South Dakota, has completed a rehabilitation of the 6,880-foot-long Runway 7-25 at Pierre Regional Airport. This $6.3 million project included the installation of a new asphalt surface, which replaced the aging runway, and the addition of enhanced lighting and updated runway markings to improve visibility and safety. This project was largely funded by state and federal grants.
Another major runway construction is already in the works. In August 2024, city commissioners approved the update of the airport’s other primary Runway 7-25. This new project, estimated to cost $7.2 million, will include resurfacing the existing asphalt, installing updated lighting systems, refreshing the runway markings, and adding new wind cones to ensure compliance with aviation safety standards.
Although the airport primarily caters to general aviation, the airport accommodates a variety of aviation operations. Pierre Regional Airport features a single Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) that offers services for general aviation. Denver Air Connection, the airport’s sole commercial carrier, operates 12 weekly scheduled flights to Denver, supported by the USDOT’s Essential Air Service Program.
