Travelers in Pierre, South Dakota, can look forward to uninterrupted air service this summer. Denver Air Connection (DAC) has announced an extension of its flights through July 31, 2025, ensuring continuous connectivity as SkyWest Airlines, operating as United Express, prepares to commence service on August 1, 2025.

This transition is part of the Essential Air Service (EAS) program, a federal initiative by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) designed to maintain commercial air service in smaller communities. On April 1, 2025, the USDOT awarded a four-year EAS contract to SkyWest Airlines to provide service between Pierre and Denver International Airport (DEN).

The decision to award the contract to SkyWest was influenced by several factors, including the airline’s ability to offer seamless ticketing and connections through its partnership with United Airlines, improved access to connecting flights, reasonable pricing, and frequent flyer benefits. Notably, SkyWest’s proposal came with the lowest subsidy among the bidders.

To facilitate a smooth transition, DAC agreed to continue its services for an additional two months beyond the original contract end date. This extension allows SkyWest sufficient time to prepare staffing, flight schedules, and other logistics necessary for commencing operations.

Passengers can continue booking flights with Denver Air Connection for travel through July 31, 2025. SkyWest Airlines is expected to open reservations for its new routes starting in early May, with flights commencing on August 1 .

The collaborative efforts between DAC, SkyWest, and local authorities aim to ensure uninterrupted service and expanded travel options for residents and visitors alike. SkyWest Airlines, Inc. will provide Essential Air Service (EAS) at Pierre South Dakota, using 50-seat CRJ-200 aircraft, for the four-year term from: June 1, 2025, through May 31, 2029.
